RS Lesson: April 10 2011

“Residing in a mountainous terrain that yielded little wood, the Incas’ most effective weapons were stones, rolled
down hills or hurled from slingshots. But while the stones that Inca warriors hurled could kill as well as stun,
Spanish iron helmets and mail or iron vests normally deflected the missiles of stone and rendered them incapable of deadly harm. How ineffective stone-age weapons proved against iron-age ones can be seen in the Inca siege of
Cuzco in 1536 where 190 soldiers wearing steel helmets and vests defeated 200,000 people armed with stones.
Gonzalo Pizarro claimed to have cut off the hands of two hundred Inca warriors with his steel-edge sword in a
single afternoon during the battle for Cuzco. The lone Spanish casualty was a soldier who failed to wear his
helmet.” - Cambridge Illustrated History of Warfare

Why would that soldier not wear his helmet? Was he in a hurry? Did he think he was strong enough without it?

What can we do to put on the “whole armor” of God? How have you felt added protection from temptation as you have prayed? studied the scriptures?

“[The] armoured man hold[s] in his hand a shield and in his other hand a sword. … That shield was the shield of faith and the sword was the sword of the spirit which is the Word of God. I can’t think of any more powerful weapons than faith and a knowledge of the scriptures in … which are contained the Word of God. One so armoured and one so prepared with those weapons is prepared to go out against the enemy” (“Feet Shod with the Preparation of the Gospel of Peace,” Brigham Young University Speeches of the Year [9 Nov. 1954], 7).

“I want to ask this congregation, every man, woman and child, to answer the question in their own heart, what kind of a being God is? Ask yourselves; turn your thought into your hearts, and say if any of you have seen, heard, or communed with him. This is a question that may occupy your attention for a long time. I again repeat the question – What kind of a being is God? Does any man or woman know? Have any of you seen him, heard him, or communed with him? Here is the question that will, peradventure, from this time henceforth occupy your attention.

How does knowing some of God’s attributes affect your relationship with him?

Crochet Bookmark Pattern:
Chain 7-10 slip stitch in first chain to form circle.
Chain 3 then 2 dc in same space
Chain 3 then 3 dc in same space.
Chain 3 and turn
Rows 2-12: 3 dc then 3 ch then 3 dc in chain space to form a fan
dc down to first stitch on last row then chain 3and turn
Row 13: 3 double crochet then chain5 then 3 double crochet,
double crochet down into first stitch in last row.
chain 3, 4dcin same space then sc in next space,
then 5dc in next to end, at end circle 10dc then sc in first space and 5dc around.
In circle on top 5dc then chain2then 5dc and slip stitch in chain3 to end.

Tassel: wrap thread around fingers a few times then place in in end with the chain stitch

Dutch Oven Cooking - 2011

Thanks to the Kimpels and the Sphars for helping us learn and for the great food! For those of you who didn't make it - you missed out! Because of the Rain and Snow we ended up INDOORS!

Thanks to Ron and Suzanne, we had Baked Beans and a Peach Crisp! Tom and Debbie made us Stew and Dump Cake!

Suzanne told us to mix together a can of Sprite and a boxed cake mix and pour them over a can of fruit. Then bake it up for a great dessert! Also, Her father used to make Sumgolian: Brown bacon and onions in your pan then add an equal number of cans of creamed corn and baked beans! She says it sounded awful but tastes great!

We talked aboout cooking with a Dutch Oven (and if you don't have one you can do the same thing in the oven at home - Put your oven temperature at 350 degrees and go for it!) and Cleaning one. If you have a rusted Dutch Oven, Pour a can of Coke or Pepsi, Tomato Juice or something else acidic into it and let it set overnight. Then you should be able to scrub it out and re-season it.

Tom & Debbie told us to mix Chili, ground beef, onion, taco seasoning and whole tomatoes together and layer it with corn tortilla shells and bake. (They said the also had layers of cheese, sour cream, etc.) for a Tamale Pie. Also, after you cook your Breakfast, roll out some Rhodes dough until it's a flat rectangle (like for cinnamon rolls). Then sprinkle it with 1-2 shredded apples, Brown sugar, Cinnamon, Raisins and Nuts. Rull into a log and slice into rolls. Let it raise for about 2 hours and Bake. Stake Women's Conference

Just a reminder that Women's Conference is tomorrow, Saturday Feb.26th from 10am-noon at the Stake Center. The author of "To the Rescue" will be speaking and President Argyle and his wife. We will be serving "Cafe Rio" salads and have yummy desserts afterward.

Hope you all can make it!!! It doesn't matter if you signed up or not just come!!!

2011 Book of Mormon Challenge

We have been challenged to read three pages each day from the Book of Mormon with our spouse and Mark the verses where the Savior is referenced. Our Young Men and Young Women have also been given a challenge. This is the Schedule we were given:

December Craft Activity

We did a Tile Nativity picture for our December Activity. Here are a few pictures from the night!

We wiped off our tiles to make sure they were dust free

Positioned the picture

Pulled the white backing sheet off the picture and made sure it was still positioned correctly

Rub the picture down firmly with a scraper (like the Pampered Chef Brown Scrapers or a credit card)

Peel the clear sticker off slowly (If the black comes up, press it back down and rub some more.)

Visiting Teaching Conference

We are all daughters of God.

That is why we have the program of Visiting Teaching.

Stake Treats from the General Relief Society Broadcast

I hope all of you took the opportunity to listen to the Relief Society Broadcast last weekend! There were some wonderful talks and we definately came away spiritually fed! For those of you who came to the Stake Center, these are the recipes for the wonderful Trifles that we had after the broadcast.

Together - We Can Accomplish Anything

As covenant women, we come from all walks of life, all ages, marital statuses, incomes, education levels, race and ethnic backgrounds - but together, we speak the same simple testimony, we comfort each other and sustain each other in our mutual faith. Our testimony of Jesus Christ crosses all boundaries - political, racial, economic, national. We are the same, as covenant daughters of God. That doesn't mean we are the same in all of our life decisions, or even in how we live the principles of the gospel.

The world wants to believe that we can never be perfect.

Perfectly joined together, we are unstopable.

Individually, we all have different talents and strengths, but together - we can accomplish anything the Lord needs us to do.
